I asked the same question; "Who is Matthew Hoh?"

Foreign Service Officers spend their first two tours in directed tours and are specifically prevented from spending their first tour in Iraq or Afghanistan. It is especially strange that he would be a "Senior" Foreign Service Officer as popularly reported as new hires as he is described, aren't even tenured and confirmed as a true "officer" until they have completed their first two tours; normally in 4 or 5 years. Finally, it is unusual that nothing else is on the WEB about someone who is so obviously a bright star if he is brought into the Foreign Service so quickly and rises to the professional heights that are indicated by the stories.

Is he a political appointee? Was he brought on board specifically to stage a media event? Something you can do is check out the State Department WEB Site on how to become a new officer and read about typical careers of these new officers. Matthew certainly doesn't follow these career patterns.

So where is the investigative journalism that used to exist? Are we all becoming that lazy?

I totally agree with Matthew Hoh...we are an occupying nation. We install puppet govenrnments in other countries so we can get control of their resources. Our missions are not noble ones.

Glad to see people like Mathew Hoh who have the guts to take a stand against another war without end, a war without a goal, a war with no purpose. If the purpose is to make Americans safer, this war isn't doing it. If the purpose is to bring democracy and modernity to Afghanistan, this war isn't doing it. We need more like Captain Hoh.

I have noticed that some bloggers are questioning whether we should continue to have a Senate, partly because of the filibuster. I just wrote a post on the U.S. Senate itself. I argue that it was designed with discordant goals and that it should be more like the European Council in the EU in representing State governments. Here is the link (in case you are interested): http://euandus3.wordpress.com/2009/10/27/the-u-s-senate-what-is-it-really/
